There is nothing quite like the annual North Carolina Azalea Festival in Wilmington. Begun all the way back in 1948, the 5-day eventgets underway on April 6, 2016. The festivities kick off with the Festival Parade, which is viewed by over 100,000 spectators. Afterwards, the coronation of Queen Azalea takes place with celebrity guests, city officials, and the Cape Fear Garden Club Azalea Belles all in attendance. During the evening of April 7, an outdoor concert is scheduled at the Belk Main Stage featuring The Avett Brothers who have appeared on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,”“The Late Show with David Letterman,” and “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.”The following day, April 8, is rich in activities, including the Airlie Luncheon Garden Party, a street fair, juried art show, Bluewater Grill gathering, and City RockFest Tour where several bands will strut their musical stuff for you.
The fourth day of the North Carolina Azalea Festival is when you’ll be able to check out the lively happenings going on at The Azalea Festival Multicultural Stage. Lasting two days, this family-friendly and very colorful event provides some of the finest performing artists from around the globe. Enjoy Mexican, Chinese, Indian, Native American, Polynesian, Japanese, Hawaiian, Middle Eastern, and Celtic traditional and contemporary musicians and dancers. And last but not least, on April 10, is the last event of the festival: the Waterfront Music Series at the Bluewater Grill featuring top-notch local bands.
