Got a thing for craft beer? Well, get yourself down to downtown Wilmington, NC where there is no shortage of places to satisfy your craft beer cravings. Named for the Venus flytrap, which can be found within a 70-mile radius of Wilmington, Flytrap Brewing offers everything from pints to tastings. Experience one of their Belgian-style brews or expand your imbibing horizons with a Saison with Lemon in the summer or Chocolate Coffee Milk Stout in the winter. Over at the Front Street Brewery, a Wilmington staple since 1995, you’ll discoverthe crisp and somewhat hoppy Coastal Kolsch and the rich Dram Tree Scottish Ale. Tours of the brewery, which boasts one of North Carolina’s first female head brewers, are available.
One of the more experimental breweries is the Wilmington Brewing Company. Savor craft beers with the most unusual ingredients, everything from lemongrass to hot peppers. If hoppy beers make you happy, order up a pint of their Jalapeno Saison and Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter. Set up in a former barn, Broomtail Craft Brewery is known all around town. Their popular creations, The Rappe (a light imperial stout) and Elysium (a malt-heavy Belgian-type), can be found on taps throughout Wilmington (as well as in their barn/brewery, of course). Named for armored Civil War-era ships that were built nearby, Ironclad Brewery has built its reputation on its Cape Fear Defender IPA. You’ll be able to sip this bold brew in either the upstairs or downstairs bar. You can continue your journey through the Wilmington craft beer scene by visiting This Link.
