Fat bikes are bikes with tires are that are wider than four inches. Ideal for riding on thick sand, these bikes are incredibly popular. So popular, in fact, that fat bike riders everywhere are entering competitions. One of those is the U.S. Open Fat Bike Championship on Saturday, March 12, 2016 at Wrightsville Beach near Wilmington, NC. The 2nd annual race will begin at 2:00 p.m. from Blockade Runner Beach Resort. And the course is a real doozy. It's going to be a large oval-shaped track, which will encompass both thick sand and hard-packedsand near the edge of the water. You can expect ultra-tight turns, lightning fast sections when the tide is low, and exceptionally deep truck tracks.
The U.S. Open Fat Bike Championship boasts three categories of racers: Fat Racers, Really Fat Racers, and Super Fat Racers. The Fat Race will cover 8 laps in about an hour while the Super Fat Race will take over two hours and will traverse more than two dozen miles. Men and women of practically every age group is welcome to give this race a go. Groups are divided up as follows: 10-15, 16-35, 36-45, 46-55, and 56+. A portion of the entry fee, which is $50 ($65 after March 1), goes to the Wrightsville Beach Foundation. If you're a spectator, it's free. Though it's recommended that you bring everything from cowbells and whistles to cheer on your favorite fat bike racer.
